Student Visa Services
Germany (Student Visa) Overview:
The German Student Visa is an official entry permit that allows non-EU/EEA students to travel to Germany to pursue their university studies and even work part-time. It is issued by German embassies or consulates in your home country (or the country where you legally reside) and is a key requirement before starting your studies. It's best to apply for your German student visa as soon as you receive your university admission letter. We generally recommend applying at least 2 months before your intended travel date to account for processing delays.
-
If you are applying for the summer semester (March/April), aim to submit your application between late January and early February
-
If you are applying for the winter semester (September/October), aim to submit your application between late July and early August
Note: Start gathering your application documents as soon as possible to ensure you can apply for the student visa on time. Even if you are still waiting for some documents, some embassies allow you to book your visa appointment in advance, just make sure you can submit all documents by the appointment date.
Average Processing Times
The processing time for a German student visa varies depending on the country you are applying from, the time of year, and the completeness of your application. On average, it can take 4–6 weeks from the date of your interview or submission of documents. However, it may take longer during peak application months (July-September and January-March). In most cases, your application is forwarded to immigration authorities in Germany for approval, which plays a role in the duration of the processing.
Note: We will help you to submit a complete application with well-organised documents to help speed up the process.
Visa Validity and Entry Type
The German student visa is categorised as a national visa, also known as a "D visa", and is typically issued for 3-6 months. After you arrive in Germany, you would need to apply for a student residence permit at the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) before it expires.
Both the student visa and the student residence permit allow you multiple entries – meaning you have the flexibility to travel in and out of Germany. There are 3 types of German student visas that fall under the National Visa (D Visa) category
German Student Visa: The German student visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken) is the standard visa for international students who have received an official admission letter from a German university to start a degree programme (e.g. Bachelor's, Master's, PhD). If you have been admitted to a preparatory course (Studienkolleg), you would also apply for the German student visa.
German Student Applicant Visa: The German student applicant visa is the ideal visa if you have already applied to a German university or preparatory course but haven't received an admission letter yet. You can also apply for the student applicant visa, if you need to take an entrance exam or attend interviews before officially receiving admission. It does not permit full-time study but enables you to complete the application process while already in Germany.
German Language Course Visa: The German language course visa (Visum zum Spracherwerb) is meant for internationals moving to Germany to attend an intensive German language course (at least 18 lessons per week) without any plans to study at a German university.
